“3 Subtle Signs Aisha Would Choose Nex” Follow-Up: Signature Colors
Remember my post about the three subtle signs Aisha would choose Nex instead of Roy? Sign #1 was that Nex wore bluish-green accessories, including the gem on his Paladin uniform. It seemed like a subtle way to match him with her, since her signature color is aqua green, a bluish green.
That makes sense…until you notice the bluish-green gem on Brandon’s uniform:
Also, in “Broken Dreams” (Winx season 6, episode 11), Helia and Timmy’s gloves and the stripes on their gym shirts were also the colors of their gems: orange (Helia) and yellow/gold (Timmy). So Roy and Nex weren’t unique in that regard.
But I still think Nex’s gem color was a sign that Aisha would choose him. Why? First of all, the Specialists’ gem colors had been the same since they debuted:
- Helia’s was orange
- Timmy’s was yellow
- Brandon’s was green
- Sky’s was (light) blue
- Riven’s was purple (more like magenta)
These colors matched the colors of the rainbow. Which color was missing? Pure red (as opposed to Riven’s purplish red). So if Rainbow wanted Roy to fit into the squad, his gem color should have been red.
But in both of his seasons, his gem was yellow green. Roy threw off the rainbow theme.
It didn’t matter back then, but think about Winx season eight. We would have had two guys, Roy and Brandon, in green uniforms. (Imagine Roy with his blond hair and a yellow-green jumpsuit. He would have looked like a plant!)
“Couldn’t Rainbow have switched Roy to red?” you ask.
Sure — except he rarely wore that color, so it would have seemed random. Plus, it doesn’t fit his personality (what little he had). Red is the color of passion, energy, and excitement, but Roy didn’t have much of those qualities.
So when Rainbow introduced Nex in Winx season six, red was still available. But instead, they gave him a bluish-green gem. Does that mean he copied Brandon, too? Yes, but no.
Nex claimed red through his Paladin uniform and his civilian outfits. I’ve talked about this before, but I think Rainbow dressed him in red instead of blue because of his symbolism (and the yin-yang theme). So it didn’t matter what color his gem was because unlike the Specialists, his gem didn’t represent his signature color.
That means Rainbow could have made his gem any color. Yet they picked another Specialist’s color — which also happens to be Aisha’s signature color. Coincidence? I think not, especially since the Specialists’ gems usually didn’t match their girlfriends’ colors.
TL;DR: Brandon and Nex had the same gem colors, but not the same signature colors. Nex’s signature color is red (the only unclaimed color of the rainbow), and his gem color was meant to match Aisha’s signature color: aqua green.
[…] Roy never really joined the squad. After all, his gem color didn’t fit in with theirs. […]
[…] know the marketing reason for this change — after all, red had his name on it — but what about the in-universe reason? My headcanon is that Nex really likes the Specialists […]
