Inktober 2019 Drabble #10: “Commitment”

“Nex,” said Tecna, “I need to finish the upload, or you’ll have significant gaps in your memory.”

The Paladin nodded slowly and gritted his teeth in preparation. One last time, code flowed from Tecna’s phone, arching and winding until it all disappeared into his visor.

“Upload complete,” she said.

Aisha threw her arms around him. “Nex, I’m sorry! I’ll try to be more patient. It’s just…I’m scared. I’m scared of losing you.”

Nex wobbled onto his feet, then took her hands. “You won’t. I promise. By the end of the month, I’ll know more about Andros than your dad.”
