Holding Hands: Saying So Much By Doing So Little
There’s something so real about holding hands, some kind of complex simplicity, saying so much by doing so little.

I love seeing Aisha and Nex hold hands more in Winx season eight. Does anyone else think this gesture is special for them? It’s not unique to their relationship, of course, but they seem to value it more than the other Winx couples do.
When the Winx visit the Specialists in “A Kingdom of Lumens” (Winx season 8, episode 2), she greets him by laying her hands in his.
During the Sirenix mission, Nex stops Aisha to talk about what happened at the Andros Anniversary Festival. He takes her hands again. I think he’s trying to comfort her and encourage her to say how she’s really feeling.
In “The Light of Gorgol” (Winx season 8, episode 9), Aisha loses it when all her friends are captured by the anemones…because of her. After stopping her from rushing in after them, Nex clutches her hand to help her calm down and remind her she’s not alone.
Those are a few of my favorite examples, but there have been other moments this season.
Why did Rainbow make this gesture the couple’s habit? I think it’s a reference to their confession/confirmation scene in “Legendary Duel” (Winx season 6, episode 24). When Aisha admits she was scared for Nex’s life when they fought Icy earlier, he smiles and takes the fairy’s hand.
The Love Language of Holding Hands
I predicted that Aisha and Nex would be one of the most affectionate couples in the group. Do you remember my posts on Una di Noi Winx about the Winx and Specialists’ love languages? A love language is the gesture or behavior that causes you to feel loved by someone. It can also be the primary way you show your love.
The term was coined by Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages. Those languages are (I’ll adapt the names):
- Quality Time
- Gifts
- Affection (a.k.a. Physical Touch)
- Praise & Compliments (a.k.a. Words of Affirmation)
- Actions (a.k.a. Acts of Service)
In those posts, I chose Affection for both Aisha and Nex. Even in past seasons, they seemed to appreciate affection more than anything else. Season eight basically confirmed it.
Holding hands may be their favorite gesture, but we’ve seen others, too, like hugging or touching each other’s shoulders. It’s standard couple behavior, but because both Aisha and Nex speak this love language, it’s the purest expression of their love for each other.
I’m sure we’ll see more of them holding hands in the second half of season eight. But you know what I’m waiting for: an unblocked kiss! Please, Rainbow! It needs to happen!
I’ve always thought hand-holding was an unappreciated sign of affection. It’s just a quieter way of saying, I am here for you. And that seems to be how Aisha and Nex use it too. It’s adorable. 🙂
Again i say “Bad Squonk!” in regards to that blocked kiss. “How dare you make Nex use a not so nice word in front of Aisha in the most g-rated season in this series!” (avoids the cry-cry’s storm by holding a bucket or two up)
