“I’m Still Here”: Why Nex Exists
I hate that the Winx fandom doesn’t even treat Nex like he’s Aisha’s boyfriend. They act like he’s just a random character hovering around the group — for three seasons soon, by the way — with no attachment to anyone.
Don’t they realize this is the longest Aisha has known or dated anyone? Don’t they know Nex is the only guy who has a canon reason for falling in love with her that goes beyond similarities? Don’t they know all the symbolism that links these two together, to the extent that it wouldn’t be a stretch to call them soulmates?
Nex exists to love and be loved by Aisha. Period.
Yet the Winx fandom acts like this relationship is temporary. Like it doesn’t even exist. Like it doesn’t even matter.
A Song For Nex
Have you seen the Disney movie Treasure Planet? (It’s as underrated as this couple. ?) Sometimes when I think about Jim’s theme, “I’m Still Here”, I think about Nex. (It’s a weird connection, but my brain does that all the time.) Not all the lyrics work for this situation, but some of them do, especially these two lines:
They can’t tell me who to be
‘Cause I’m not what they see
It’s like I said in my first post about why I don’t support Aisha/Roy. The Winx fandom doesn’t understand Nex’s character. They think they do, but how they describe him doesn’t match how Rainbow describes him. The fandom’s version of him is a myth at worst and a caricature at best.
I also love these lyrics:
And you see the things they never see
All you wanted, I could be
Now you know me, and I’m not afraid
It feels like something Nex would say to Aisha. ? She always sees the good in him. Remember in “La Prova di Nex” when she told him, “Once [my dad] gets to know you better, he’ll love you”? Replace “my dad” with “the Winx fandom” and “he’ll” with “they’ll”, and I hope that’s a true statement.
Finally, these lines sum up the whole situation nicely:
And I want a moment to be real
Wanna touch things I don’t feel
Wanna hold on and feel I belong
And how can they say I never change?
They’re the ones that stay the same
I’m the one now
‘Cause I’m still here
Nex has been in the group for two seasons (three soon). I’m sure he’d wanna feel like he’s one of them, like he belongs with them. Yet the fandom still treats him like an outsider.
Also, this fandom has stayed the same for over a decade. People have come and gone, but the same opinions and topics get recycled year after year with no one ever challenging them. I honestly have more faith that Nex will grow as a person than that the fandom will.
Regardless, he’s still here. He’s the one Aisha chose. I don’t know what it’ll take to change the fandom’s attitude towards him, but this couple deserves another chance.
I think the fandom is too stupid to understand and accept him. Like, they tolerate/crush on a blonde 10 year old Sky-knock-off from a French-Korean toddler show but Nex? He gets hated for no reason at all.
Actually, I think my position in this fandom is similar to that of Nex. We both wanna be part of something big, yet get rejected, disrespected and insulted while worthless scum (Winx-hating fake fans on one hand and characters from a whole different -and pretty dull- show on the other) gets cheered on…for no reason at all. Is this just? Is this fair? It isn’t. That’s why we must fight for him. Nex deserves better than what he is given. Nex (not “Max”, stupid autocorrection!) is here to stay.
It’s Nex and us (his supporters) against the world. But maybe it’s better this way. Maybe it’s okay that we are fighting against the world. Even if we should lose (hopefully not but victory is not granted either), we have fought for something that’s dear to us.
Also, shipping is the problem of all fandoms: That’s why Nex is hated, that’s why a French baby show is loved by many. Because of this fucking shipping crap, and I am so sick of it.
You know, I’m starting to wish internet was restricted to very few people on this planet. Do you remember the DS9 episode where Sisko and O’Brien are stranded on a planet without any technology? It was in the second season, episode 15, “Paradise”. The leader of the small community living on the planet (her name is Alixus) has written several studies about humanity and the heavy reliance on technology. Sisko later stumbles upon her work and tells O’Brien after he questions how she views mankind: “She says we have become ‘fat’ and ‘lazy’ and ‘dull’ ” This prognosis of hers is how I view our society thanks to our heavy reliance on the internet. There are so many idiotic ideas and views spread thanks to the web that you can only wonder how long it will take until we have another world war at our hands. Especially people like Trump, Kim, Bolsonaro, Temer, May and all the other simpletons in leading positions are doing everything they can to take us back into the Dark Ages with their views on the LGBTQ+ community, hatred for minorities, and overall xenophobic attitudes. What can we (you, I, the others on this blog) do? Sorry it’s become so philosophical and kind of misanthropic in this post (if we had another place to talk about these matters, I would) but I need to get this out and I feel like you understand me the most as a fellow Winxer (and Trek fan and what else we both might enjoy). I mean, I know I can trust you to be honest with me. And you told me once what you’ve been through so far, so I guess you kind of have an idea of what’s going on in my head.
