Winx Fanfiction: Let’s Brainstorm a Backstory For Nex
Posted On June 18, 2021
You know what? I’m curious. Do you have ideas for Nex’s backstory?
I do, but I want to hear your thoughts. Nex has a past, too, and a story to tell. How do you imagine them?
For those of you who don’t like him, I have two requests for this challenge:
- Keep Riven out of it: Nex is not “Riven 2.0”, so don’t shoehorn him into that role. Try to come up with something new based on his personality, not Riven’s.
- Don’t make Nex evil: That’s too easy. Besides, if Nex were a villain, he wouldn’t have fought by the Winx and Specialists’ sides for three years now.
Alright, are you ready? Challenge on!
A long time ago Nex faced the death of somebody close to him. He was an only child in his family so he had gotten close to the elderly and little people wherever he went. Then it happened, two people he was closest to passed on. he learned to hide his pain by making jokes, most of them being Carlos!-teir puns. It seemed like it was the end until he met Aisha. Then he learned that “it’s a new beginning”
I see what you did there! Carlos jokes like from Magic School Bus….I could see that for Nex
That’s what you meant, Will? I can’t believe I didn’t catch that!
Don’t you mean you didn’t Get it? ?
i can find some way to connect things back to a book /vintage pbs series, now just take a look at my theory in that regard…while there’s Butterflix in the sky. ?
The Frizz probably came from the magic dimension. I mean she did tell D.A that teachers have surprising adventures over the summer. I wonder if she’s from Zenith.
I always thought that he had a rough childhood..parents that were never home and when they are then they’re often drunk and that the parents may abused him or friends of this parents when they’re watching over him. But after this kind of mess what happened to him he still manages to smile and makes jokes to feel people better..
That would be sad. ? I think it’s possible. I’ve always thought he may not have the best relationship with at least one of his parents.
I like to imagine that he has a lot of siblings. That’s part of why he feels the need to show off – he didn’t want to be overlooked in the crowd of his siblings. (It also explains his extroverted nature, because he’s used to spending all of his time with other people.) I imagine them mostly as older siblings, because these types of behaviors tend to appear in the youngest children of a family. However, him having a younger sibling or two also makes sense. He acts like a meddling older brother to Timmy, and later in the season he warms up to “parenting” Squonk. So I’ll say he is the third child of four.
I definitely think Nex isn’t an only child, especially with how social he is. His friendship with Timmy does make it harder to guess his birth order. I see what you mean about him possibly having at least younger sibling, but I think it could also indicate he’s the youngest.
He may relate to Timmy because he’s the weakest Specialist in the group, and if Timmy’s younger than Nex, it could be this is his first time having a friend he could treat as a younger brother. As for “parenting” Squonk, if Nex is the youngest, he’s never had to take care of someone smaller than him.
But I think him being a middle child makes sense, too. I’ll have to do more research on middles.
If Nex is a middle child…Jan Brady said it on the Brady Bunch as to what it’s like so much so that middle child syndrome is actually named after the character portrayed by Eve Plumb. “Like being invisible”
I don’t know if Nex feels fully invisible, per se – I’m not sure he could have such an ego if that were the case. But I do think that he lived in a house where you have to work for attention. The attention he gets makes him feel good and boosts his ego, he acts out to get more of it, his confidence is boosted more, etc.
As horribly written and unnecessary as the love triangle was…well, it would play into this headcanon more. Nex is used to having to compete a little for attention; Roy isn’t. Roy blows up and becomes possessive, Nex goes with the flow and learns from his mistakes. But in a world without the love triangle, this theme applies as well – maybe Aisha is one of the first people to provide him their undivided attention. He realizes this is a type of attention he’s not quite used to, and that’s where his nervous/dorky side comes out.
This got off-topic from Will’s original point, sorry. I’m just spitballing. ?
Hey, don’t worry about it, i do the “non-sequeter” thing too. ? Interestingly enough Non-Sequeter is also a comic strip in your newspaper if it’s still reprinting.
No, don’t apologize! This is good stuff! It fits with what I picked as his Enneagram type, too. Threes only got attention when they accomplished something, so they came to believe they are what they do. Combine that with having lots of siblings sucking attention away, too, and you can see why Nex would become competitive.
Also, I said there’s a wound from One Stop For Writers’ Emotional Wound Thesaurus that matches almost all his traits. It’s “Being Raised By Parents Who Loved Conditionally”. Getting attention sporadically, maybe only when he did something they approved of, would definitely count.
[…] start by giving him a backstory. I liked the ideas you came up with, but I’m worried about one thing: a tragic backstory would justify the fandom’s “Riven 2.0” […]
Since pride is a major flaw for him I’d say maybe he had overaffirming parents? Or maybe parents who loved him conditionally, considering he sometimes feels like he has to prove himself to people.
As regards to his extroverted nature, maybe he grew up with siblings? Given how annoying he can be I’d say he’s the youngest.
Funny you should say this because I’ve suggested those ideas in a couple posts:
