To everyone celebrating today, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! And I hope the new year (and new decade!) will be wonderful for you and your family.
Yeah, looking at the Springhole article again, Nabu was definitely a canon Relationship Sue:
“…created for the sole purpose [of] putting into a relationship with another character…” Obviously. He was created to be Aisha’s boyfriend.
“In the case of a Relationship Sue, canon characters will begin acting very out-of-character.” Aisha definitely acted out of character while she dated Nabu. She became clingy and babyish (Stella even called her a baby); she used flowery, over-the-top language (“Nabu, my sweet!”); and she fangirled over him every time he did things with magic that she could probably do herself (“Oh, Nabu, you’re so great!”). Also, in the comics, she threw a full-on temper tantrum when he admitted he loved another girl named Helisia. (I hate that name because it’s way too close to “Helia”.)
“Any flaws or vices that the Intended Relationship Partner had that might put xir and the Sue at odds with each other will magically vanish.” All her frustrations with guys — and being forced to conform to a marriage tradition she didn’t agree with — completely disappeared. Also, neither of them had been in a relationship before, and Aisha struggled with social awkwardness, trust issues, and separation anxiety. Did any of this complicate their relationship? Nope! Everything was perfect because Nabu was Just That Speshul!
”Characters involved with a Relationship Sue will be way too willing to neglect or give up anything and everything from friends to hobbies to jobs.” This was literally a conflict in an episode of season four (episode 11, I think). Aisha neglected her friends and the Winx’s mission to spend time with Nabu. Stella called her out on it, but the others defended Aisha and said Stella was just jealous.
”Meanwhile, the Sue xirself won’t have any family, friends, or obligations that could in any way interfere with or complicate the relationship – or if xe does, xe will be willing to drop them all for the love interest.” Since Aisha and Nabu’s relationship was an arranged marriage, they were the only couple who didn’t have to worry about what each other’s parents would think of them. That killed one possible source of conflict and development right away. Also, remember how Nabu supposedly wanted to make his own life decisions? Screw that! He let his parents choose not only his wife, but also where he would live (Andros Palace) and what his occupation would be (co-ruler of Andros). So much for personal freedom!
”The characters may realize they are Meant To Be or something similar in a ridiculously short amount of time, or realize they are truly in love just days or even moments after meeting each other.” Two days. It took about two days in universe (about three episodes of interaction) for Aisha to go from being annoyed with him to agreeing to marry him one day.
”That the characters are clearly just infatuated with each other is never addressed, as for a Relationship Sue infatuation is confused and conflated with true love.” Rainbow definitely went out of their way to treat Aisha and Nabu’s limerence like true love. The other couples held their relationship up as the ideal. Riven even asked Nabu for advice. And Nabu was able to give perfect relationship advice…even though this was his first relationship, and it was an arranged marriage!
Here’s another one of those backlashes:
”So let me get this straight…just because nabu treated aisha with love and respect, was intelligent”.
I couldn’t read the rest of the comment, because i needed to be logged in (and i do not have a Tumblr account).
Also someone stated it’s ”Gary Stu” not ”Mary Sue”.
Like, does it matter? ?
What i am getting the most sick of lately is the fandom’s trying to proof to everyone
Aisha and Flora’s skintone changing is ”whitewashing” and ”racist of Rainbow” ?
The Mary Sue post has gotten a decent amount of attention already. Someone shared it on Facebook, so some people followed the link there. But I’m sure 99 percent of the Winx fans who read the post will dismiss it as garbage because Nabu is exempt from criticism. ?
Nabu shouldn’t be exempt from any kind of criticism. He was a character — a product of someone’s imagination — just like all the others in this show. But a lot of fans do act like you shouldn’t say anything negative about him. It’s like he was some kind of deity. ?
That’s the thing with Nabu. The Winx fandom doesn’t judge him like a character, but like a real person. They gush over his actions and personality, but they ignore the fact that those actions and his personality were scripted.
It’s gonna sound weird to say this, but…who cares if Nabu treated Aisha well? That’s not the point. If this fan thinks that exempts him from being a Mary Sue, I don’t think they even understand what a Mary Sue is.
A Mary Sue does everything the right way. That’s that part of their character. They’re not just loving and respectful; they’re the perfect boyfriend or girlfriend. They’re not just intelligent; they’re the most intelligent and mature character in the group. They always know exactly what to say, they always have the best advice, they can read people perfectly, and their abilities are better than anyone else’s.
The mark of a Mary Sue isn’t what they do. It’s the sheer perfection of it, whether they should be perfect or not. A Mary Sue has no meaningful flaws that would cause a normal character to make mistakes like, you know, a real human being would. They can do no wrong.
So of course, Nabu treated Aisha well. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be a Mary Sue.
But I mentioned that he and Aisha had plenty of reasons not to be a perfect couple. Neither of them had been in a relationship before, Aisha had a lot of social awkwardness (which Nabu should have had, too), it was an arranged marriage, they were teenagers — the list goes on. Yet Rainbow ignored all that and chose to make them the perfect couple, which is unrealistic. (Let’s not even talk about how Nabu conveniently had everything in common with her, which is also ridiculous.)
Their whole love story was painfully contrived. But like I said, the Winx fandom cannot and will not criticize Nabu right now. Anything you say against him will be ignored.
I mean…he was. A site called Springhole.net talked about the subtype Relationship Sue, basically a Mary Sue-style love interest. Nabu fits almost all the criteria:
But let’s face it: the Winx fandom cannot and will not criticize Nabu for anything. It’s been 10 years since his death episode premiered, yet they’re still too upset to take the blinders off. Nothing will change until Winx Club ends, and everyone has gone their separate ways. They’ll be able to come back later with fresh eyes.
Right now while everyone still feeds the Nabu obsession, they won’t listen to you unless you’re obsessed with him, too.
” I have seen this trend of calling characters of color Mary Sues for no actual reason but really…..Nabu? Anon couldn’t think of any other character?”.
” I don’t think Nabu counts as a Mary Sue. Especially when he died”.
”and it’s not like they gave him enough time to even be a mary-sue since they killed him off a season later”.
”He was a creep in the third season and I did find his and Aisha’s relationship initially problematic owing to the arranged marriage context. So OP is pretty much talking BS”.
” I have seen this trend of calling characters of color Mary Sues for no actual reason but really…..Nabu? Anon couldn’t think of any other character?”.
Good ol’ Tumblr. If you criticize a person or character of color, you’re wrong and you’re just racist. ? Maybe you “couldn’t think of any other character” because none of the other characters of color in Winx Club are Mary Sues!
This isn’t even a counterargument. So what if Nabu was a character of color? That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a Mary Sue. Believe it or not, not all Mary Sues are white!
Also, calling characters of color Mary Sues is a trend? The only other character in Winx Club I’ve seen people call a Mary Sue is Bloom, and she’s white. So, nice try.
” I don’t think Nabu counts as a Mary Sue. Especially when he died”.
”and it’s not like they gave him enough time to even be a mary-sue since they killed him off a season later”.
A character doesn’t need to be in the story for a long time to be a Mary Sue. It’s about their behavior, other characters’ behavior around them, and their abilities (which are usually better than they should be).
Also, the character who started it all, Lieutenant Mary Sue from the fanfic “A Trekkie’s Tale”, died at the end of the story. So dying doesn’t absolve a character from being a Mary Sue. If anything, it could make it more obvious because it freezes them in their god-like state of perfection forever.
”He was a creep in the third season and I did find his and Aisha’s relationship initially problematic owing to the arranged marriage context. So OP is pretty much talking BS”.
Wow! Finally, someone made a good point!
No, really, this is the only valid argument against Nabu’s Sue status. At first, he definitely didn’t come off as perfect. He stalked Aisha, for crying out loud!
However, even if he wasn’t a Mary Sue in season three, he was definitely one in season four. I think it’s fair to say he became a Sue, especially since people say the same thing about Bloom. In season three, he was just a shallow love interest and an obvious clone of Aisha. I’ve talked about that already:
Merry Christmas to you too, Admin! ?
The same to you, Tori! I wish you a magical Christmas and a happy new year full of prosperity!
merry christmas tori although while i like the picture the santa hats don’t work with the outfits
You’re right. They don’t. ?
Off-Topic: I sended in a confession on Tumblr Winx Club Confession site
about Nabu being a Mary Sue. Oh, oh the backlash i got ? It’s almost funny.

Nabu should not be exempt form being criticised for being a you know what

Finished! https://theobliviousprattler.wordpress.com/2019/12/30/was-nabu-a-mary-sue-or-gary-stu/
You’ve inspired me to write a post for the other blog. I plan to publish it tomorrow because I don’t wanna publish it on New Year’s Eve.
Oh, boy… ?

All in all, that wasn’t as vicious as I expected. But they also didn’t try hard to prove Nabu wasn’t a Mary Sue, so…yeah.
