“The Exchange” — Part II

“Aisha!”

The water fairy swiveled around. In the last beams of sunlight, she could just barely see her five friends racing toward her. Finally! She and Nex had been waiting for what felt like hours on the now-deserted beach.

The five fairies — Bloom, Stella, Musa, Tecna, and Flora — staggered in one after another and hunched over to catch their breaths.

“Girls, what took you so long?” said Aisha.

Musa shot up, hands on her hips, and glared behind her at Stella. “You mean ‘who!'”

Aisha clenched her fists. Typical. Stella always took her sweet time, even in an emergency.

Bloom laid her hand on Aisha’s shoulder. “Your mother — is she safe?”

“I don’t know. She said something happened to the guards. I’m worried no one’s protecting her.”

“We need to get to Andros as soon as possible,” said Tecna, mashing buttons on her PDA. “But flying there would be too dangerous. The captors would spot us for sure.”

“We can go through the ocean,” said Aisha.

“But we don’t have our Sirenix powers anymore,” said Flora.

“We can still use the underwater gates. Here. Give me your hands, girls.”

She held out her hand, and the girls layered their hands above hers.

“Me too?” said Nex, pointing to himself.

“Of course, sweetie.”

He placed his hand at the top of the pile. Aisha closed her eyes and concentrated, gathering the magic energy within her. She felt it separate, then rush from her chest to the tips of her fingers. When she opened her eyes, each of her comrades was enveloped in a light-blue aura, just as she wanted.

“I recognize this spell,” said Tecna. “It’s the same shield spell you cast when we helped Tressa save her mother.”

Aisha nodded. “That’s right. And this time, I’m not blind. I’ll be able to see the guys who took my father, and I’ll get him back!”
