Follow-Up: “Winx Season 9: Thoughts and Theories”
Well, I’m not too proud to admit when I’m wrong. If Rainbow called Winx season nine a reboot, it’s a reboot. Plain and simple.
I stand by what I said about the new format, though. Winx Club was a serialized show, meaning each episode advanced an overarching plot. But if season nine has 52, 13-minute episodes rather than the usual 26 half-hours, that suggests it’ll be episodic instead. Episodic kids’ shows rarely have plots. Instead, they’re made up of standalone, mini stories — “shorts”, if you will.
That’s why I don’t think this reboot will be what the Winx fandom hopes it is: a retelling of Winx seasons 1-3. Instead, I think Rainbow will take the barebones premise of Winx Club — fairies at a magic school who fight evil — and use it as a backdrop for magic hijinks. Think PopPixie, which had the same episode format and no plot. It was just the wacky adventures of the Pixies of Pixieville.
So like I said in the last post, I think Rainbow is turning Winx Club into a preschool series. I could be wrong, but there’s a lot of evidence, including the CG animation.
What About Aisha and Nex?
Since this is a reboot, Nex may not be in Winx season nine. What does that mean for this blog?
Nothing.
It was gonna happen eventually whether Rainbow started over, they caved to the fans and brought back “Gary”, or Winx Club finally ended. So I made a plan a while ago.
First, this blog is staying put. Everything I’ve said about Aisha and Nex is valid even if they’re not together. Of course, if Rainbow keeps them together in Winx season nine (which is possible), I’ll keep posting about them here.
If not, I won’t watch the season. ?♀️ This couple is the only reason I still care about Winx Club. I used to be ashamed to say that, but not anymore. Characters make the show, so why wouldn’t you watch for them?
Second, I’ll shift focus to my non-Winx blog, AishaAndNex.com. I created it as a place to explore Aisha/Nex stories Rainbow would never tell in Winx Club, anyway. In fact, this month for NaNoWriMo, I’m writing the first draft of my fanfic Baby Steps. It’s been tough so far, but I definitely won’t give up now.
Finally, I’m still working on my Winx reboot. It will have Nex in it, and it won’t just be a retelling of the first three seasons but the entire franchise: Winx Club, World of Winx, the comics, everything. I’ve already found lots of interesting (and more cohesive) ways to connect them. Who knows? Maybe the fandom will like my story more than season nine. ?
But we don’t know what’s gonna happen yet, so don’t worry. I hope Aisha and Nex will continue their love story in Winx season nine (or start a new one), but no matter what, it’s not over for them.
[…] UPDATE: After seeing information I missed, I wrote a follow-up to this post. […]
If they bring Nex back for season 9 can they fix is hair, I dunno maybe it’s just me but it looks off.
I’m really excited for your rewrite, I myself am working on one too and think it’s nice to see Winx fans making more consistent and enjoyable retellings of the show. One thing I do ask is that you fix Bloom and Sky’s relationship, they’re one of my favourites but their relationship doesn’t seem to progress and Diaspro coming back to ruin them as a running gag is testing my limits
If Winx season 9 is CG, I have no idea what Nex’s hair might look like. ?
Anyway, I’m planning to fix all the relationships. The never-ending Bloom/Sky/Diaspro love triangle will not happen in my rewrite. Drama for the sake of drama is lame writing.
Actually, a no plot spin-off sounds more promising than a plot driven season, there are many things in winx that needs to be explored. Wish they keep the current boyfriend rotation tough, I like the no drama point they finally got on in season 8, still, if the boys happen to exist then it would be better if they don’t look like 14 year olds with 25 year old girlfriends, season 8 would be actually perfect if both winx and boyfriends looked the same age cause it was really out putting at first, then again I’m here for the story and characters so …
I’ll keep waiting for a Roxy driven episode and some Tecna’s backstory, and maybe the specialist families to be introduced, you know, those whos name aint Sky (?) specially Brandon, as he is the one marring Stella I see no reason for king Radius not knowing them [Bonus points for La prova di Nex comic and Aisha’s parents wanting to meet their daughter’s boyfriend].
Oh and good luck with the NaNoWriMo!. Will keep waiting for the BabySteps Novel.
If Rainbow focuses on developing the characters and not on making kids laugh, this new format could be a good thing. Also, there’s no plot to screw up each season!
There’s at least one reason I think they might keep the current boyfriends (i.e. Nex). While the fandom is hoping for Nabu, of course, one thing they’re not considering is the younger Winx fans barely know who he is. Some don’t know him at all!
Hard to believe, I’m sure, but Winx season four was 12 years ago. Sure, Rainbow re-airs seasons in Italy all the time, but those younger fans still wouldn’t have the attachment to him that the older fans have. And I still think this is gonna be a preschool series, so it’s not aimed at the older fans.
The current generation of Winx fans knows Nex better. It’d be weird to them if he were suddenly replaced by some guy who was in the group before they were born!
[…] Winx season nine looks like a reboot of the series, after all. (I still think it’ll be aimed at preschoolers, but I won’t talk about that again today.) Naturally, since Nex wasn’t in the first several […]
[…] Why do I keep saying Winx season nine may be aimed at preschoolers? Like I said, it has the hallmarks of a preschool show: CG animation and dozens of episodes, each less than 15 minutes long (aside from two-parters). Some examples I found through Google: Fancy Nancy (based on a popular book series), Vampirina, a new show called Santiago of the Seas, and of course, the juggernaut PAW Patrol. […]
